Living Novel: "Fitzgerald Lake" In Honor of Olivier Audouard
I carry this mourning painting across the frozen Fitzgerald Lake in January 2019. I'm singing to myself "Zombie" from the Cranberries. I remember hearing Olivier sing this song and play it on his guitar, when I was 14 years old. I remember thinking, This is joy. And I will never forget when Olivier drove to Geneva to rescue me when I was ill in Visp. Olivier died in January, the same month as John Berger. I feel angry with this month: too cold and too mean, taking these two giants from us. I was not able to travel to make it to either of their funerals and this makes me sad. And so, I carry this painting, that I made in mourning, across this frozen lake and think of you both.
